A Dark Room

You wake by a dying fire. The game runs in the window below — your progress saves automatically right in this browser. Want it full-size? Open A Dark Room on its own page.

New to it? It starts almost empty on purpose — open "How to play" below before you decide it's broken.

How to play

A Dark Room is a slow burn. For the first minute you really can only tend a fire — that's the game, not a bug. Stick with it and it quietly turns into something much bigger.

  1. Light the fire, then stoke it. Each button has a short cooldown — the little bar fills back up before you can click again.
  2. Keep stoking and wait. After a minute or so the firelight draws a stranger in from the cold. She'll warm up, then build a hut.
  3. That hut unlocks gathering wood and a second area, A Silent Forest. Wood is your first real resource — spend it to build and to keep more people arriving.
  4. From there it opens up fast: traps, buildings, crafting, a world to explore, and more. Follow whatever new buttons appear.

Your progress saves automatically in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick it up later. Best played on a computer — on a phone the game shows a "come back on desktop" notice.
